The Israeli military has escalated its offensive in central Gaza, attacking a city that had previously experienced relative calm during the ongoing conflict with Hamas. Deir al-Balah, a locale that had served as a haven for Palestinians fleeing violence, has now been thrust into the center of hostilities as Israeli forces raided a United Nations facility, specifically a World Health Organization (WHO) building.
In a statement, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the WHO, detailed the distressing events that unfolded during the raid. Israeli soldiers reportedly handcuffed and stripped male staff, as well as their family members, holding them at gunpoint. Furthermore, women and children were forcibly evacuated southward during the incident, amplifying fears among the local populace.
