Progress in Trade Talks: Modi and Vance Address Bilateral Relations Amid Tariff Concerns
India and the US advance towards a trade deal as Modi and Vance emphasize cooperation during a pivotal meeting.
India and the United States are reporting significant strides in their discussions regarding a bilateral trade agreement, following a meeting in Delhi between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice-President JD Vance. Vance, who is visiting India with his family, emphasized the importance of collaboration in various sectors, including trade, technology, and defense.
In a post on social media platform X, Modi stressed the commitment to mutually beneficial cooperation, underscoring the significance of people-to-people exchanges. The meeting took place on a critical timeline as President Trump's temporary suspension of higher tariffs—which were set to reach 27% for India—nears its conclusion on July 9. The halt has allowed Delhi and Washington to expedite trade negotiations.
Both leaders share a personal rapport, illustrated by Modi being among the first global leaders to engage with Trump after his reelection. However, the US president has been vocal about India's tariff policies, branding the country as a “tariff king” and expressing discontent over the unequal trade relationship. In the wake of their meeting, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer pointed out the significant challenges relating to trade reciprocity with India.
India has recently reduced tariffs on various products and is contemplating broader cuts to appease US concerns, although agricultural access remains contentious—a point of friction as the US seeks market entry for its corn exports.
Modi and Vance’s dialogue also touched on defense cooperation and strategic technologies, reinforcing their partnership ahead of the upcoming Quad summit, which is expected to see Trump's attendance.
Following their discussions, Modi hosted Vance and his family for dinner. The visit inspired a cultural exchange as well; photographs showcasing Vance’s children in traditional Indian attire circulated widely in local media. After their meetings, the Vance family plans to explore Jaipur and visit the Taj Mahal, enriching their connection to India, particularly Usha Vance's heritage linked to Andhra Pradesh.
As tensions subtly dance around tariff negotiations, the fruitful exchange between Modi and Vance suggests a mutual eagerness to solidify US-India ties amid evolving geopolitical landscapes.
