Felix Baumgartner, famous for his remarkable achievement of breaking the world record for the highest skydive, has died at the age of 56 after a paragliding accident in Porto Sant'Elpidio, Italy. Reports indicate that Baumgartner managed a fall near a hotel swimming pool, with local officials speculating that he may have experienced a medical emergency mid-flight.
Mayor Massimiliano Ciarpella of Porto Sant'Elpidio expressed his condolences and praised Baumgartner as "a symbol of courage and passion for extreme flights." The skiing and parachuting aficionado was affectionately nicknamed "Fearless Felix,” due to his legacy of daring stunts.
Baumgartner gained international fame in 2012 when he broke the sound barrier during his iconic jump from 39 kilometers (128,000 feet) above Earth, a feat that made headlines around the globe. His adventurous spirit was celebrated by fans who have paid tribute on social media, sharing memories of his daring exploits.
He began honing his craft in 1999, when he established the world record for the highest parachute jump from Kuala Lumpur's Petronas Towers, and achieved the lowest base jump from the hands of the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio. Notably, Baumgartner successfully flew across the English Channel in 2003 equipped with a custom-made jumpsuit that featured carbon-fiber wings.
