Surge in Kidnapping Attempts Targeting Cryptocurrency Investors in France

Over 20 people arrested in connection with multiple abductions aimed at cryptocurrency entrepreneurs, raising alarm over escalating violence in the sector.

Recent police actions in France have led to the arrest of more than 20 individuals amid a series of kidnapping attempts targeting those involved in the cryptocurrency sector. Authorities respond to rising concerns about safety as incidents escalate, prompting government intervention.

French authorities have arrested over 20 individuals in a crackdown on a series of kidnapping attempts targeting cryptocurrency entrepreneurs and their families. This surge in violent incidents has raised significant concerns about the safety of individuals with substantial cryptocurrency holdings, making them appealing targets for criminals seeking ransom payments.

The recent arrests were triggered by investigations into a failed abduction attempt in Nantes and a kidnapping incident in Paris back in May. Notably, a masked gang attempted to kidnap the young daughter and grandson of a prominent cryptocurrency executive, Pierre Noizat, co-founder of the French Bitcoin exchange platform Paymium.

According to French media reports, 24 people were taken into custody following a wave of coordinated police interventions in response to these incidents. Authorities revealed that an attempted kidnapping connected to the cryptocurrency industry was thwarted by police in Nantes earlier this week.

Additional incidents have surfaced across France, including the abduction of a millionaire’s father who was seized by men wearing balaclavas in Paris on May 1. His kidnappers reportedly demanded a ransom of €5-7 million, and he was rescued days later, albeit with the loss of a finger.

The situation escalated with the violent kidnapping of David Balland, co-founder of the cryptocurrency firm Ledger, earlier this year. Balland and his wife were abducted from their home, and police managed to rescue them shortly after. Reports indicate that a €10 million ransom was demanded in that case, leading to the arrest of several suspects.

In response to the spate of violent incidents targeting cryptocurrency professionals, French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau convened an emergency meeting with industry leaders in mid-May. Retailleau committed to mobilizing "the entire state apparatus" to ensure the safety of those in the crypto industry and to pursue the individuals responsible for these violent crimes actively.

As attacks on cryptocurrency-related individuals continue to intensify, both law enforcement and industry stakeholders are calling for enhanced security measures to protect against this alarming trend.
