Massive Drone Assault Devastates Kharkiv Amid Ongoing Conflict**

Recent drone and missile attacks by Russia on Ukraine's second-largest city inflict heavy civilian casualties and raise tensions further amid stalled peace negotiations.**

A significant escalation in the conflict occurred when Russia launched a large-scale aerial assault on Kharkiv, resulting in fatalities and numerous injuries. As both sides grapple with conflicting accounts regarding prisoner exchanges, the humanitarian crisis intensifies.**

A severe attack by Russian forces targeted Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, unleashing a barrage of drones and missiles that left at least four civilians dead and nearly 60 injured, according to local officials. The Kharkiv Mayor, Ihor Terekhov, reported that 48 drones, alongside two missiles and four glide bombs, were deployed in the attacks occurring over the weekend. Kherson also suffered casualties, with two fatalities reported following Russian strikes.

The drone assault took place late Friday, impacting 18 residential apartment buildings and damaging 13 homes, injuring a baby and a 14-year-old girl among the most vulnerable. The Kharkiv governor, Oleh Syniehubov, disclosed that a civilian industrial facility was also targeted, causing additional fear that more individuals might be trapped beneath the rubble.

This violent wave of attacks was portrayed by Moscow as retaliation to what they termed "terrorist actions" against Russian infrastructure, which had taken place the previous weekend. In a grim continuation of hostilities, Kharkiv experienced subsequent attacks from glide bombs on Saturday, resulting in another death and around 18 injuries.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strikes, characterizing them as acts of "pure terrorism" rather than military strikes and called for increased pressure on Russia from international allies.

In what seems to be a further complication in the ongoing conflict, reports emerged of disagreements regarding a prisoner swap previously agreed upon in Istanbul. Russian negotiator Vladimir Medinsky claimed Ukraine delayed the acceptance of both soldiers' remains and the swap of prisoners, alleging that Ukraine failed to arrive at the designated point for negotiations.

Ukrainian officials fired back, expressing disbelief and maintaining that they had been preparing for the exchange in accordance with previously established protocols. They accused Russia of not adhering to the agreed-upon terms, asserting that Moscow provided "alternative lists" that did not align with those discussed.

The conflict remains intense as both nations have failed to reach an agreement on a ceasefire, each side entrenched in its stance. Recently, Ukraine's military launched its own attacks deep within Russian territory, targeting air bases and further complicating the landscape of this relentless war.

As the humanitarian situation in Ukraine worsens amid these violent exchanges, concerns mount over the continuing impact on civilians caught in the crossfire, and both countries appear nowhere near a comprehensive resolution to the conflict.
