Fatal Drone and Missile Strikes Hit Kyiv as Tensions Escalate in Ukraine
Heavy bombardments by Russia result in casualties and injuries in Ukraine's capital and across the nation, amid an ongoing conflict.
Russia initiated a series of large-scale drone and missile strikes across Ukraine on Friday morning, impacting the capital city of Kyiv as well as strategic locations such as Lutsk and the Ternopil region. Local officials reported a grim toll: four fatalities, including three rescue workers who were engaged in emergency response operations, and at least 20 individuals injured, as confirmed by Kyiv's Mayor, Vitaliy Klitschko.
The air assaults prompted air raid alerts in not only Kyiv but also in several other cities including Kharkiv, Sumy, and Luhansk, indicating the widespread nature of the threat. The strikes disrupted the train system in Kyiv after shelling compromised metro tracks, further complicating the situation for civilians.
In Ternopil, military chief Vyacheslav Negoda described the event as the largest air attack the region has ever faced, with local officials confirming five individuals were hurt and significant damage was inflicted on residential areas and government buildings. Meanwhile, in Lutsk, five more people sustained injuries due to drone and missile assaults.
The Russian defense ministry reported intercepting 174 Ukrainian drones and claimed engagements conducted over Crimea and the Black Sea, underscoring the elevated hostilities. The escalation comes shortly after Ukraine launched what it termed its most extensive long-range drone strike on Russian military bases, hitting at least 40 warplanes.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted that 117 drones were utilized in this operation against Russia, emphasizing his government's commitment to countering military threats. With Moscow indicating a possible retaliatory response, the cycle of violence appears set to continue amidst these volatile developments in the ongoing conflict.
