**Farewell to Skype: Remembering the Love, Connections, and Legacies it Fostered**

As Skype prepares for its closure, users reflect on the cherished moments and emotional connections forged over the platform.

Many have utilized Skype not just for communication, but as a source of comfort, love, and closure in times of loss.

In less than a month, Skype, the beloved video call service that brought families and friends together across distances, will close its doors for good on May 5. For over two decades, it has been a lifeline for long-distance couples, families, and those navigating grief, yet its decline amidst Microsoft’s focus on Teams has left many nostalgic and apprehensive about the future of their communications.

Take the case of Weng and Owen Williams, whose love story blossomed thanks to Skype. In 2012, Weng relocated from Macau, China, to Wales for an internship, where she met Owen. The two connected as friends initially, but their relationship deepened as they maintained contact over Skype after Weng returned home. “Skype kept us going,” Weng recalled, recounting daily video calls that helped them navigate the challenges of a long-distance relationship. Ultimately, they got engaged and now enjoy a happy marriage, largely attributed to their communication on the platform.

For Erica from New Zealand, Skype transformed into a tool for healing after her husband’s unexpected death in 2017. As she sifted through his work computer, she found solace in the messages they had exchanged. To seek closure, she sent messages to his Skype account, effectively initiating a back-and-forth conversation with her late husband’s account. This unconventional exchange provided Erica with the necessary comfort, apologies, and closure she sought to move forward.

Long-distance connections have also played a vital role in other families. Susan Bertotti, living in Chile, has called her mother Vera every day on Skype for the past 15 years. “Skype has given my mother and me the most wonderful close connection all these years,” Susan expressed, lamenting the impending loss of this daily connection as her 99-year-old mother now faces a potential communication barrier.

Businessman Stan Calderwood has relied on Skype for affordable international calls essential to his work. He expressed concern over losing the platform that allowed him to conduct numerous business calls without exorbitant fees. With the announcement of Skype’s closure, he is now in search of alternatives that would allow him to continue his business practices.

While Microsoft anticipates the transition from Skype to Teams will be smooth, many users are apprehensive about the loss of a service that has been integral to their lives. Approximately 28 million users were reported to be using Skype in March 2022, and those who had previously relied on the service must now choose to migrate their data or adapt to Teams, potentially losing familiar functionalities.

The end of Skype marks the closure of a chapter in tech history, leaving millions of users to bid farewell to a platform imbued with love, friendship, and poignant memories. As the world prepares for this shift, one thing remains clear: Skype’s legacy and the connections it fostered will endure, even as the service itself fades away.
