Man Leaps Onto High-Speed Train in Austria After Missing Departure
A 24-year-old Algerian man is arrested after jumping onto a moving train to avoid missing his ride while taking a smoke break.
In a bizarre incident that unfolded in Austria, a 24-year-old Algerian man made a daring leap onto a high-speed train after he was allegedly left behind during a scheduled stop. The event took place at St. Poelten station, located approximately 64 kilometers (60 miles) from Vienna, where the man exited the train to take a quick cigarette break.
Unfortunately for him, as he relished his smoke, the train began to depart. In a split-second decision, the young man climbed onto the gap between two train carriages in an attempt to board while it was still in motion. Eyewitnesses report that he began banging on the windows to attract the attention of fellow passengers inside.
The escalation of the situation led to an emergency stop, allowing him to board. However, his encounter with the train conductor was reportedly quite heated, sparking further drama on the train. An OBB rail spokesman confirmed that the train, which was traveling from Zurich to Vienna, was delayed by seven minutes upon arrival.
Rail officials condemned the man's actions, warning that such reckless behavior could easily lead to tragedy. “It is irresponsible; this kind of thing usually ends up with someone dying,” emphasized the spokesman.
The man has since been arrested, and this incident recalls a similar case from earlier this year in Germany where a fare-dodger clung to the outside of a high-speed train, motivated by a desire not to part with his luggage left behind during a smoke break.
