Austria's Braunau am Inn to Rename Streets Honoring Nazi Figures

Two streets in Hitler's birthplace face renaming due to Nazi affiliation, reflecting Austria's complex history.

The decision marks a symbolic shift in recognizing the atrocities of the past, with an aim to acknowledge those who resisted Nazism.

In a landmark move, the council of Braunau am Inn, Austria, has voted to rename two streets that pay homage to Nazi supporters, a decision prompted by long-standing public grievances and a legal review. This initiative underscores the town's effort to confront its historical ties to Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime.

The streets in question are named after composer Josef Reiter and entertainer Franz Resl, both of whom were affiliated with the Nazi party. Local media reported that the decision was taken after a "secret vote" and followed a government-commissioned report that declared the retention of these names unconstitutional.

Approximately 200 residents will have their addresses changed following this renaming, which comes in the wake of Austria facing criticism for its historical narrative surrounding World War II. Historians have urged the Austrian government to redefine its identity, which has often leaned towards portraying the nation as a victim rather than acknowledging its active participation in the war.

The Mauthausen Committee, a group dedicated to preserving the memory of the victims of the Holocaust, has welcomed the street renaming as a move of "symbolic significance." Chairman Willi Mernyi emphasized their persistent effort in advocating for this change, expressing gratitude to supporters of the cause. Committee member Robert Eiter suggested that the new names honor individuals who courageously resisted the Nazi regime, citing former deputy mayor Lea Olczak and Maria Stromberger, a resistance fighter at Auschwitz.

While Braunau am Inn moves towards a more conscious remembrance of its past, Austria has already seen numerous place names altered due to Nazi associations. This shift is particularly poignant as the nation continues grappling with the impact of the Holocaust, where approximately 65,000 Austrian Jews, alongside various marginalized groups, lost their lives under Nazi persecution. Despite such changes, remnants of this dark chapter linger, reminding many of the need for vigilance against historical amnesia.
