K-pop Star Bain of Just B Proudly Comes Out During Concert in Los Angeles
In a groundbreaking moment for the K-pop industry, Bain from Just B announces his pride in being part of the LGBT community during a live performance.
During a recent concert in Los Angeles, Bain, a member of the K-pop group Just B, made a heartfelt announcement to his fans, declaring, "I am proud to be part of the LGBT community." This significant moment took place amidst a solo performance and was greeted by enthusiastic cheers from the audience, a testament to the supportive fanbase that surrounds the artist.
At 23 years old, Bain, whose real name is Song Byeong-hee, becomes one of the few K-pop idols to openly share his sexual orientation, challenging the norms of an industry notorious for its stringent control over artists' personal lives.
In a post after the concert, Bain expressed his support for those within the LGBT community and those still exploring their identities. "You are seen, you are loved, and you were born this way," he stated. He then honored Lady Gaga by performing her empowering anthem "Born This Way," referring to her as "my queen."
The response from his bandmates was overwhelmingly positive. In a statement reported by Korean media, Siwoo, another member of Just B, shared his emotional reaction, recalling how he shed tears witnessing Bain's bold performance and acknowledgment of his true self.
Fans of Just B swiftly rallied behind Bain, demonstrating their love and pride online. One of the most liked comments on his Instagram post read, "We love you so much and are so proud of you for being yourself." Another fan expressed their affection, stating, "You are so loved. So proud to be your fan. Be proud of who you are."
Just B, formed in 2021, has released a total of five EPs and multiple singles, rapidly making a name for themselves in the K-pop landscape. However, Bain's coming out remains a rare occurrence in South Korea, where discussions around homosexuality are still considered taboo despite its legality. A report by Human Rights Watch in 2022 highlighted the pervasive discrimination faced by LGBT individuals in the country.
Bain is not the only K-pop star to bravely come out; last month, Lara, a member of the girl group Katseye, publicly identified as queer. In 2020, Jiae from the now-disbanded girl group Wassup also shared on Instagram her bisexuality. Nonetheless, Bain's announcement is seen as a significant step towards changing perceptions within the K-pop industry and society at large.
