Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, aged 70, currently embroiled in a high-profile trial connected to an alleged coup attempt following his defeat in the 2022 presidential election, has landed in hot water with Brazilian authorities. Police have accused Bolsonaro and his 41-year-old son Eduardo of obstructing justice as they probe potential interference in the legal proceedings against the elder Bolsonaro.
According to a recently released 170-page report by Brazilian police, evidence has emerged pointing to Bolsonaro’s intentions to seek asylum in Argentina as a means of evading criminal prosecution. A draft letter was allegedly found on Bolsonaro's mobile phone, aimed at Argentine President Javier Milei, marking a controversial attempt to gain refuge. The letter reportedly showcases his alleged intent to escape his legal troubles, despite Bolsonaro's outright denial of such claims, calling them part of a "political witch hunt."
The trial, which is set to enter its final stages soon, hinges on accusations that Bolsonaro attempted to undermine the results of the 2022 election in which he lost to rival Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. While Bolsonaro has consistently challenged the legitimacy of the trial, he had previously stated he had never entertained thoughts of fleeing the country.
