In brief

In a groundbreaking moment for LGBTQ+ rights, a couple's long-awaited dream of marriage was fulfilled amidst a mass wedding event, marking Thailand's recognition of same-sex marriages.

On January 22, 2025, in a scene brimming with joyous emotion, Thailand's newly legalized same-sex marriage law came to life as hundreds gathered at Paragon Hall in Bangkok for a mass wedding ceremony. Among them were Rungtiwa Thangkanopast and Phanlavee Chongtangsattam, a couple who had waited over a decade for this opportunity. Back in 2013, their attempt to wed on Valentine’s Day ended in disappointment when officials rejected their registration, citing the law prohibiting marriages between women. Now, with a legal framework finally in place, the couple's long-cherished hopes were fulfilled. "I am delighted and excited because we have been waiting for this day for a very long time,” Rungtiwa expressed with joy. “For 20 years, we have loved each other and had to hide from society’s disapproval. But now we can stand proudly.”The mass wedding was organized by the rights group Naruemit Pride, which symbolizes the blossoming acceptance of LGBTQ+ rights in a country that previously lagged in legislation. A significant turnout of officials and media created a festive atmosphere as couples were married one by one, commemorated with floral decorations and backdrops for photographs. This initiative not only symbolizes progress in Thailand’s stance on LGBTQ+ rights but also brings hope to many individuals across the region as they advocate for equality and recognition. As the newlyweds emerged from the ceremony, their spirits mirrored the significance of the day — a celebration of love, acceptance, and resilience, marking a new chapter in Thailand's history.
