In brief
A fourth soldier's body has been recovered in Lithuania following an unfortunate training accident that led to the deaths of four servicemen.
April 1, 2025 – The body of a fourth U.S. Army soldier has been recovered in Lithuania, underscoring the somber conclusion to a search initiated after a training mission turned tragic. The soldier, alongside three others, had gone missing on March 25 when their armoured vehicle, an M88A2 Hercules, sank into a bog during an operation to extract another vehicle. The U.S. military confirmed the recovery on Tuesday but has yet to disclose the identity of the deceased soldier. The recovery operation sparked a massive international collaboration that included troops and experts from Lithuania, the U.S., Poland, and Estonia, aimed at finding the missing servicemen.According to military officials, the team had likely strayed off the road and subsequently became trapped as the vehicle sank. An intensive rescue operation was launched immediately, with rescuers facing significant challenges in extracting the submerged vehicle. After locating it on March 26, the task required heavy machinery, divers, search dogs, and even drones equipped with ground-penetrating radar to manage the extraction.Gen. Christopher Donahue, commander of U.S. Army Europe and Africa, expressed gratitude for the assistance provided by Lithuanian forces and other NATO allies during the challenging search efforts. “We have leaned on them, and they, alongside our Polish and Estonian allies, have enabled us to find and bring home our soldiers,” he stated. On the same day of the fourth soldier's confirmation, President Gitanas Nauseda of Lithuania expressed profound sympathy towards the U.S. military and the families of the fallen, highlighting the strong bonds between NATO allies, especially in light of concerns regarding the resilience of the alliance amid recent geopolitical tensions.Nauseda underscored Lithuania’s commitment to supporting the families affected by this tragic incident, stating, “Lithuania has been praying for all four missing soldiers, and now, with all our hearts, we stand with their families.”The U.S. Army has launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident, aiming to prevent similar occurrences in the future. As the military community mourns the loss, the collaborative spirit with which rescue operations were conducted shines as a testament to the enduring support among NATO allies.
