In brief

Kashmir, with its stunning landscapes, presents a stark contrast to the painful realities faced by its residents, who grapple with heavy security measures and a deep sense of alienation following a tragic attack.

Kashmir is a region steeped in paradox; it is a beautiful tourist destination and simultaneously a hotspot of conflict and alienation. The unfortunate recent massacre which left 26 individuals dead has ignited a renewed focus on the lingering discontent amongst locals, who have endured years under intense surveillance and restricted democratic freedoms. Since 2019, the Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has aimed to transform Kashmir into a success story, brimming with tourism and economic development, yet the everyday lives of its populace tell a starkly different tale of resentment. In the aftermath of the terrorist attack, a wave of fear and suspicion has gripped the Muslim-majority population. Indian authorities launched a vast operation to hunt down those responsible for the heinous act. Many locals perceive these efforts as acts of collective punishment, with thousands detained and homes of alleged accomplices being demolished. While the government’s narrative celebrates progress and security, residents feel increasingly alienated, caught in the crossfire of a long-standing struggle that offers little hope for resolution. This region, so often portrayed as a wondrous paradise, continues to struggle under the weight of its tumultuous reality.
