In brief

Aliza Magen, a pioneering figure in Israel's national intelligence agency, the Mossad, has died at the age of 87 in Jerusalem. Her distinguished career spanned approximately four decades, during which she became the first woman to hold a top-ranking position within the organization, serving as deputy to three directors.

Born shortly after the establishment of Israel, Magen joined the Mossad immediately following her military service, dedicating her life to the agency. Her early work saw her undercover across Europe for over two decades, where she was pivotal in managing agents and securing critical intelligence. Notably, she played vital roles in significant operations, many of which remain undisclosed to this day.Her initial assignment involved infiltrating the networks of German scientists working on missile technology for Egypt, which posed a significant threat to Israel. Fluent in German, she successfully turned contacts into valuable intelligence assets, even recruiting a former Nazi officer to assist the Mossad's efforts. In the 1970s, she was actively involved in Operation Wrath of God, targeting those responsible for the 1972 Munich Olympics attack that resulted in the tragic deaths of 11 Israeli athletes and coaches. Magen returned to Israel in the early 1980s, where her leadership extended to overseeing the Mossad's Tzomet division, which handled foreign intelligence operations and agent management, as well as running its administrative and operational divisions.Magen's legacy continues to inspire the future generations of women in intelligence and governance, marking significant achievements in a historically male-dominated field. Her contributions laid the groundwork for the evolving roles of women within security and intelligence agencies around the globe.
