US Diesel Prices Reach All‑Time High Amid Iran‑US Energy Tensions
More than just a snag on the road, the surge in diesel prices is a sign of deeper geopolitical shifts. For drivers of everything from delivery trucks to tractors, the average cost per gallon has climbed to $5.85—almost twice the average a year ago and higher than the previous record set after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Commercial vehicles burn the bulk of U.S. diesel: trucks, trains, boats, buses, farm and construction equipment. The price jump is linked to a sharp rise in wholesale oil costs that followed Iran’s military escalation at the end of February and the consequent tightening of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20 % of global oil shipments pass.
In a bold move, President Donald Trump announced a partnership with Venezuela aimed at unlocking 65 billion barrels of potential oil reserves. The deal will see the U.S. retain 55 % of a joint venture that taps a proven 65 billion‑barrel field, while investing more than $100 billion and raising over $200 billion in taxes for the Venezuelan government.
The agreement follows a high‑profile raid that secured Venezuelan former president Nicolás Maduro. Analysts, however, remain skeptical, arguing the deal may not resolve longstanding barriers that have, for years, kept investors away from Venezuela’s extraction projects.
Amid the fiery political climate leading up to the November midterm elections, pump prices have become a flashpoint. Recent polling indicates President Trump’s approval rating has slipped to 33 %, with only 31 % of Americans approving of the ongoing conflict. The cost surge hits Western states especially hard; Washington, for example, now averages $6.81 a gallon, compared with $5.03 a year ago.
High diesel costs are mirrored by an increase in gasoline prices, which now reach $4.15 per gallon—up from $3.20 a year earlier—adding another layer of economic pressure on American motorists.
