FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — A tragic shooting at Kentucky State University on Tuesday resulted in one person dead and another critically injured, with a suspect now in custody, according to local police reports. The shooting prompted authorities in Frankfort, the state capital, to place the university on lockdown as a precautionary measure. Video footage captured by WLKY-TV depicted multiple police vehicles positioned outside several dormitories, along with crime scene tape marking off the area.

The exact location of the shooting on campus remains unclear, and messages sent to campus police and school officials have not received immediate responses. Frankfort police indicated that they responded to an incident involving an 'active aggressor' and assured that the campus has been secured. More information about the incident is expected to be released during an evening news conference.

The office of the governor confirmed the shooting incident, with Governor Andy Beshear taking to social media to express his concern. 'We will share more information as available,' Beshear stated on X. 'Law enforcement is on scene, and a suspect has been arrested. Let’s pray for all those affected.'

Kentucky State University, which was established in 1886, is a public historically Black university with an enrollment of approximately 2,200 students. The university is located a short distance, about 2 miles (3.2 kilometers), from the Capitol building.
