In a grave incident that has left the nation in shock, about 32 bodies, predominantly children and infants, have been discovered in a mass grave in the western Kenyan town of Kericho. The discovery comes amid ongoing investigations into the burial practices in the region.

The exhumation occurred after police secured a court order to retrieve 14 bodies initially believed to have been buried at the site. According to government pathologist Richard Njoroge, the exhumed remains were found “stacked in gunny bags,” a detail that stressed the unusual nature of the case during comments to journalists.

Njoroge indicated that the remains consisted of 25 children, including infants and fetuses, as well as seven adults, with some body parts also recovered. Preliminary assessments suggest that the adult remains were more decomposed than those of the children, indicating that these individuals died at different times.

This alarming find raises numerous questions regarding the origins of these bodies. Some appear to have originated from hospitals and mortuaries; investigations are ongoing to confirm these details through forthcoming autopsy results. It has been reported that 13 unclaimed bodies were officially released from a hospital in Nyamira County for burial last Friday, but the association with additional bodies discovered is still unclear.

The site where the bodies were buried belongs to the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), which has denied any involvement in the burials, highlighting that no approvals were granted for such actions. As scrutiny increases, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has detained two suspects, including a public health officer and a cemetery caretaker, while additional inquiries are conducted.

This incident recalls similar previous tragedies involving mass graves associated with cult activities. In April 2023, hundreds of bodies were exhumed from the Shakahola forest linked to cult-related practices.

Human rights groups have voiced their outrage, calling for an immediate and thorough investigation into the matter, emphasizing that the horrifying level of violence involved necessitates accountability and justice. The urgency of identifying the victims and clarifying the circumstances surrounding their deaths cannot be overstated, as stated by various advocacy groups and legal representatives.
