In brief

A reflective journey from Cape Town to Pretoria reveals the stark contrast between lavish luxury and pervasive inequality in South Africa.

Chaos enveloped the area as we arrived. Porters hustled with luggage carts, and commuters poured from the bustling bus terminal, claiming their space on the sidewalk as they sprawled across suitcases and duffel bags. The cacophony was intensified by the rapid movement of minibus taxis weaving through the tumult of pedestrians. As our vehicle inched towards a sliding gate, my wife and I approached a security guard. "Blue Train," I announced, and he ushered us with a nod. Upon entering, the atmosphere shifted radically. We were greeted by the sight of a plush blue carpet stretching out from Cape Town's central train station, where two elegantly dressed butlers welcomed us, unloading our bags with care. The waiting lounge was a stark contrast to the buzzing terminal nearby—filled with soft piano melodies, sumptuous sofas, and an array of gourmet treats washed down with sparkling wine. I had decided to embrace the extravagant experience that the Blue Train offered, transforming a typically routine two-hour flight and an additional 45-minute drive from Cape Town to Pretoria into an opulent, two-night excursion spanning 994 miles. The rich history of the Blue Train, stretching back a century, creates an escape that envelops you in feelings of exclusivity. While indulging in the luxury, the harsh realities of South Africa remained just beyond our bubble of comfort. The tin shacks visible from the flight to Cape Town faded from memory, alongside the beggars cultivating their pleas for change, and those living in makeshift homes under the shadows of high-rises and chic waterfront venues. The luxurious ambiance of the train starkly highlighted the discrepancies within the society, prompting one to reflect on the coexistence of beauty and hardship that defines this vibrant country.
