The son of Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit has been arrested by police on suspicion of assault, just before he goes on trial in Oslo on Tuesday on 38 charges, including the rape of four women.

Marius Borg Høiby, 29, was remanded in custody for four weeks. Police stated that the latest allegations against him involved wielding a knife and violating a restraining order, with concerns about the risk of reoffending.

This latest arrest marks his fourth detention in a span of 18 months, beginning with accusations of assaulting a woman he had been involved with since August 2024.

Høiby has denied the most serious charges but has admitted to some lesser offenses. This incident adds to a growing list of controversies surrounding the royal family of Norway.

Additionally, the situation is compounded by recent revelations concerning Crown Princess Mette-Marit, who has faced backlash for having corresponded with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein over three years. In light of these events, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre acknowledged her 'poor judgement' in maintaining such contact.

Amid the familial distress, Crown Prince Haakon expressed support for the victims involved in Høiby's case, framing the situation as a challenging period for many.

Questions persist regarding Mette-Marit’s interactions with Epstein and the overall role of royal advisers during that time.

The intersection of personal and public life in this royal scandal suggests a pivotal moment for Norwegian monarchy and its public perception.
