Norway’s King Harald V Hospitalised, Crown Prince Takes Over Duties

The royal household announced on Monday that King Harald V, who has been on Norway’s throne since 1991, was admitted to hospital and will be on a two‑week sick leave.

The 89‑year‑old monarch, who has been receiving cortisone treatment for haemolytic anaemia, was hospitalized because of fluid retention that required specialised care.

During his absence, Crown Prince Haakon — the king’s son and heir—has been named regent and will carry out royal duties until Harald’s recovery.

The palace confirmed that the king’s admission does not affect future engagements, following a prior announcement of a “permanent reduction” in public outings to accommodate his age.

This development follows a string of health incidents for Norway’s royal family, including the queen’s recent hospital stay for heart-related examinations and the king’s earlier pacemaker placement after an illness during a Malaysian holiday.
