In a dramatic development, soldiers in Benin have announced on national television that they have ousted President Patrice Talon and taken control of the government. Reports of gunfire near the president's residence have been confirmed by a message from the French embassy in Benin.
Following the takeover, the soldiers declared the suspension of the constitution and the closure of all land borders as well as the country's airspace. They stated that Lieutenant-Colonel Tigri Pascal would lead a military transition council.
At 67 years old, President Talon was due to step down next year after completing two terms in office.
