In a significant escalation of hostilities, Iran's Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib has been confirmed killed in an Israeli airstrike, marking a critical moment in the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel.

Esmail Khatib's death, described by Iranian officials as a 'cowardly assassination', follows the recent killing of other top Iranian figures amidst escalating tensions between the two nations. Israeli defense forces continue to target Iranian leadership in their campaign to destabilize the regime. This attack has sparked outrage in Iran, with calls for retaliation and deepening fears of more extensive conflict in the region.

Iran's intelligence minister Esmail Khatib has been killed, the country's president has confirmed.

Masoud Pezeshkian stated that the cowardly assassination has left Iran in deep mourning, following Israel’s confirmation on Wednesday that it had killed Khatib in an airstrike.

Just a day earlier, Israel announced the deaths of Iran's top security official Ali Larijani and Gholamreza Soleimani, head of the paramilitary Basij force, in a series of targeted strikes.

Since the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at the onset of hostilities on February 28, multiple senior Iranian officials have been targeted in efforts believed to be orchestrated by Israel and the US to undermine Iran’s leadership.

On social media, Pezeshkian expressed condolences to the Iranian public over the deaths of Khatib and other officials, asserting that their legacy would persist robustly.

A Tehran resident shared her belief that Khatib's elimination could potentially ease the risk for protesters against the regime, as he was a key figure within the leadership.

Following the assassination, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that Khatib had been eliminated in a targeted strike in Tehran.

Katz emphasized that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and he had authorized the Israeli Defense Forces to eliminate any senior Iranian official directly identified as a threat, without needing additional confirmation.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) accused Khatib of facilitating oppressive measures against Iranian dissenters. Khatib played a significant part in the Iranian government's response to public protests, which had turned violent in the wake of new government policies.

Prominent since his appointment in 2021 by former President Ebrahim Raisi, Khatib studied under top clerics, including Khamenei, and held various senior positions within Iran's intelligence community.

Khatib had been sanctioned by the US Treasury for cyber-enabled harassment against the United States and its allies.

In the wake of recent casualties, including over 1,300 individuals according to Iranian reports, large crowds mourned in central Tehran for the fallen officials amidst escalating tensions and retaliatory strikes against Israel and various locations in the Middle East.
