In brief

Pavel Durov, the founder of the popular messaging platform Telegram, has been permitted to leave France temporarily despite facing serious criminal charges related to illicit activities conducted via the app.

Pavel Durov, the CEO of Telegram, has recently been allowed to leave France, where he has been entangled in a legal investigation concerning alleged illicit dealings linked to his messaging service. The Paris prosecutor's office announced that Durov could travel freely from March 15 until April 7, although he must return to France to continue facing charges imposed last year.Durov, who also holds citizenship in France and the UAE, expressed his relief upon returning to Dubai after spending several months under scrutiny in France. He commented on the ongoing investigation, expressing pride in his home and the company’s efforts to improve safety on the platform following the legal proceedings.Previously detained near Paris, Durov was charged last August with facilitating illegal activities through his platform, including serious allegations such as drug trafficking and child sexual exploitation, as well as refusing to comply with law enforcement inquiries. He contested the charges, arguing that he should not be held accountable for user-generated content on Telegram. In response to the legal pressures, Telegram has sharpened its policies to monitor its platform more stringently and enhance cooperation with law enforcement globally.
