ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — After spending two nights in jail, fired Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore is set to be arraigned Friday as a police investigation unfolds regarding an alleged assault.
Moore, 39, was terminated from his position on Wednesday due to what the university described as an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Just hours after his dismissal, he found himself in police custody.
Details surrounding his arrest have not been disclosed; however, authorities have confirmed that he has been held at the Washtenaw County Jail while investigations continue.
Pittsfield Township police noted they responded to allegations of assault and took an unidentified individual into custody, sparking media inquiries about Moore.
The university has not provided specifics regarding the alleged relationship but indicated that their investigation uncovered credible evidence implicating Moore, who is married and has three young daughters. Athletic Director Warde Manuel remarked that the actions were “a clear violation of university policy.”
Moore had signed a five-year contract with an annual salary of $5.5 million last year. Due to the circumstances of his termination, the university will not need to buy out the remaining years of his contract.
Moore's firing came as the Wolverines prepared to face No. 14 Texas in the Citrus Bowl on December 31. Biff Poggi, who had temporarily taken over coaching duties earlier this season during a suspension related to a Harbaugh-era sign-stealing scandal, will serve as interim coach.
As Michigan searches for a new head coach, concerns mount over potential player transfers during the upcoming winter transfer period and the future of donor engagement in light of recent events.
