HAMMONTON, N.J. (AP) — In a devastating incident reported on Sunday, two helicopters collided midair in New Jersey, leading to one fatality and leaving another person critically injured. Hammonton Police Chief Kevin Friel stated that emergency responders arrived at the crash site around 11:25 a.m. to a helicopter engulfed in flames.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has identified the aircraft involved in the collision as an Enstrom F-28A and an Enstrom 280C, both of which were carrying only their pilots. Eyewitness videos depicted a chaotic scene with one helicopter spiraling downward before crashing.
One pilot was pronounced dead at the scene while the other was taken to a nearby hospital, where they are receiving treatment for life-threatening injuries.
Hammonton, a town with a population of approximately 15,000 people, lies in Atlantic County, about 35 miles southeast of Philadelphia. Known for its agricultural heritage and proximity to the Pine Barrens, the area has been the site of various aviation activities.
Authorities from the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been alerted and are set to commence an investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
