In brief

President Trump's assertions of engaging in trade discussions with China have been met with outright denials from Chinese officials, raising questions about the validity of his claims.

Amidst substantial market anxieties, President Trump has made headlines by claiming ongoing negotiations with China regarding tariffs. However, Chinese authorities have firmly refuted these claims, stating that no discussions or consultations have occurred regarding trade issues. In a recent interview, President Trump mentioned conversations with Chinese President Xi Jinping, stating that they had been in touch "numerous times," though details about the calls were sparse. These remarks seem designed to reassure jittery investors affected by the escalating trade tensions between the United States and China. Since Trump's inauguration, the S&P 500 has dropped by 10%, reflecting concerns over this growing economic rift. While Trump’s comments suggest a reconciliation could be imminent, Chinese officials have consistently denied engaging in any trade negotiations. Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry, stated during a press conference, “China and the U.S. have not held consultations or negotiations on the issue of tariffs,” signaling a stark contrast between U.S. claims and China's stance. Furthermore, He Yadong from the Ministry of Commerce emphasized that there are “no economic and trade negotiations” underway, urging the U.S. to cease its threats and foster a more respectful dialogue. As worries about a prolonged trade war loom, the divergence between Trump’s narrative and China’s responses casts doubt on the effectiveness of the U.S. administration's strategies to stabilize markets and maintain international trade relations.
