On Friday, Cornell University’s Student Assembly opened a public hearing after a civil lawsuit alleged a woman was drugged and raped at a campus fraternity house in 2024.
Student attendees voiced anger and concern over how the university has dealt with sexual violence. “We’re not seeing real change,” said one student, urging leadership to enforce stricter policies and provide better support for survivors.
Cornell has denied that it failed to punish those involved. The university announced it will commission an independent investigator to review the incident and the institution’s procedures.
The hearing, in addition to raising campus safety questions, attracted media attention. BBC reporter Nada Tawfik interviewed students, capturing the frustration over the perceived lack of accountability.
