Four children were among at least 14 people injured in an overnight Russian air attack on the capital Kyiv, Ukrainian officials said.

Two high-rise residential buildings were hit in the strikes, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said, without specifying if they were struck directly or damaged by falling debris.

Everyone is receiving medical assistance, some have been hospitalised, Kyiv's military administration stated in a post on Telegram.

Meanwhile, Russian air defenses reported the destruction of a drone heading towards Moscow, according to the city's mayor, Sergei Sobyanin.

The strikes occur as U.S. President Donald Trump indicated he would only engage with Russian President Vladimir Putin if a beneficial deal could be assured. Plans for a meeting in Budapest were recently abandoned.

Trump mentioned, I've always had a great relationship with Vladimir Putin, but this has been very disappointing, during a flight to Asia, suggesting a growing rift between the two nations.

Efforts for peace have been hampered, with Trump expressing hope that China might play a role in facilitating negotiations to end the conflict, scheduled to meet China's President Xi Jinping soon.

Although previous talks with Putin yielded little, Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev suggested a diplomatic resolution is closer than before, referencing Ukrainian President Zelensky's shift toward using current battle lines as a starting point for negotiations.

The situation remains tense as Trump's administration has announced new sanctions targeting major Russian oil companies amid escalating military actions.
