Bill Gates Facing Congressional Probe on Epstein Ties
The former Microsoft chief and noted philanthropist entered a Washington hearing room to answer questions about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, the financier who was convicted of sexual crimes and died while awaiting trial. Gates pointed to the gaps in his understanding and said he was unaware of the extent of Epstein’s activities, but he acknowledged a mistake in spending time with him.
The House Oversight Committee invited Gates for a “low‑key” interview, hoping his testimony would aid the “important work” of the committee to seek justice for Epstein’s victims. Gates welcomed the opportunity, telling the reporters he saw the hearing as a chance to explain that he had “no professional dealings” with Epstein beyond brief philanthropic discussions.
His links to Epstein first entered the spotlight when the U.S. Department of Justice released over three million pages of documents early this year. Gates’s name appeared thousands of times, in emails, photographs and other correspondence, suggesting he had met the disgraced financier on multiple occasions.
While Gates has repeatedly denied involvement in Epstein’s illegal activity, he has admitted that he “was foolish” to spend time with him. A 2019 TV interview saw the billionaire admit his judgment was poor, and a later staff memo from the Gates Foundation noted an attempt by a small group of employees to lobby Epstein for philanthropic funding.
The committee’s letter to Gates stipulates three critical questions the senators will ask: 1) Why did Gates associate with a man who was already a convicted sex offender? 2) Why did he remain curious about Epstein’s troubling past despite the public knowledge? 3) Was Epstein trying to influence Gates, or did Gates try to leverage Epstein’s network for philanthropic benefit?
Among the evidence the National Justice documents reveal is a photo of Gates near an aircraft with Epstein’s pilot, as well as images of Gates with Epstein and other women. Documents also contain emails that allege Epstein coordinated illicit trysts involving Gates and “Russian girls.” Gates strongly denied these claims, though he admitted to having affairs with two Russian women.
The Gates Foundation subsequently apologized, saying it regretted staff interactions with Epstein. It confirmed that no funding was obtained and that the foundation did not pursue a collaboration. The question remains: why invest significant time in a man whose promised philanthropy never materialised?
