In brief
Brazilian authorities have moved to charge ex-President Jair Bolsonaro in connection with a conspiracy to undermine democracy after his electoral defeat. Accusations include violent attempts to dismantle the democratic rule and organize a coup.
Brazil's federal police escalated the legal predicament of former President Jair Bolsonaro on Thursday, calling for criminal charges against him and over thirty associates pertaining to an alleged coup attempt. The move follows accusations that Bolsonaro engaged in a systematic effort to retain power after his loss to current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the contentious 2022 elections, which Bolsonaro claimed were marred by fraud. The police have recommended charges of "violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, coup d’état, and criminal organization" against Bolsonaro and members of his close circle. However, they did not specify the exact actions that prompted these recommendations. This development comes shortly after authorities arrested four members of an elite military unit, including a former key aide to Bolsonaro, for allegedly plotting against Lula in the lead-up to his inauguration in January 2023. In addition to these charges, Bolsonaro is already facing legal scrutiny in two separate cases: one involving attempts to falsify Covid-19 vaccination records and the other concerning alleged embezzlement of gifts received from foreign leaders during his presidency. The unfolding legal challenges signal a comprehensive crackdown on actions perceived as threats to Brazil’s democratic framework.
