Ukrainians went to bed on Friday night weighed down by the unsettling thought that Donald Trump might yield significant concessions to Vladimir Putin in their anticipated meeting. However, Saturday morning brought a different scenario as the summit in Alaska dwindled into a non-event with no political or strategic agreements reached. Paradoxically, the realization of a failed summit turned out to be a relief for many in Ukraine.

In the absence of any substantive discussions, the focus shifted to the manner in which the summit unfolded—the optics, as political analysts would term it. Russian President Vladimir Putin, responsible for the brutal war against Ukraine, received an exceedingly ceremonial welcome in Alaska. American soldiers ceremoniously rolled out the red carpet while Trump greeted him with applause and a friendly handshake. This spectacle extended to the two leaders traveling together in Trump’s presidential limousine, where an evidently jovial Putin could be seen enjoying the moment.

The scene provoked outrage across Ukraine. "While red carpets and high-level ceremonies typically accompany such events, in this instance—considering the context of a brutal war caused by Putin—it should not have occurred," expressed Maria Drachova, a 40-year-old lawyer in Kyiv. Watching the event unfold, she commented that it appeared choreographed to flatter Putin. "The rational world is behaving irrationally by giving him this welcome,” she hastily remarked.

Reports of Putin's plane being escorted by four American fighter jets further fueled the discomfort in Ukraine. Observers were left shaken as Putin ambled down the red carpet, laughing with Trump, under the shadow of an American B-2 bomber patrolling above. Oleksandr Kovalenko, a Ukrainian political analyst, critiqued the event as legitimizing a war criminal. "There was absolutely no need for such excessive pomp. This meeting should have been conducted with restraint, stripping away any semblance of honor."

After their greetings, Trump and Putin addressed reporters at Elmendorf Air Force Base before a banner that read "Pursuing Peace." The atmosphere shifted dramatically when a question regarding civilian casualties was directed at Putin, who responded with a smirk and a dismissive gesture. This reaction struck a chord of deep anguish among Ukrainians who have endured immense losses due to the ongoing conflict. "Seeing this unfold crushed me," said Serhii Orlyk, whose homes and loved ones have been lost to the war's devastation. "I understand the necessity of certain rituals, but the show was highly distasteful, especially his mockery."

In a stark contrast to Putin’s animated demeanor, Trump appeared surprisingly subdued, speaking briefly and failing to present any tangible accomplishments from the summit. This left experts like Kier Giles from Chatham House worried about the precedence set by Trump. "This was a significant perception win for Putin, elevating him back onto the global diplomatic stage," Giles noted, pointing out that no mention of Russia's aggressive actions was made during the discussions.

Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, spoke out about the vital need for European leadership to remain engaged in negotiations to ensure that instances like the Alaska summit do not occur unchecked. He is scheduled to return to Washington, hoping for a more favorable outcome than his previous experiences with Trump. Analysts underline that while the U.S. has many strategies available to aid Ukraine, overt displays of respect for Putin should not be among them. "Such spectacles may have been intended to appease Putin," said Kovalenko, "but they appear more like Trump indulging in his whims, absent any coherent strategy."
