In brief
Efforts to control significant wildfires near Jerusalem continue as firefighting teams work diligently to extinguish the flames amid fears of worsening weather conditions.
Firefighters in Israel faced an uphill battle on Thursday as they fought relentless wildfires around Jerusalem for a second straight day. Authorities cautiously reopened the primary highway between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, allowing evacuees to return to their homes after disruptions coinciding with Independence Day celebrations.Tal Volvovitch, a spokeswoman for Israel’s fire and rescue service, emphasized the urgency as the team aimed to completely extinguish the fires before additional wind gusts were expected later in the day. “We’re doing everything we can to finish in the coming hours because the wind gusts can bring us back to where we started,” Volvovitch stated.Though firefighters had made some progress, fully controlling the blazes remained elusive. The exact cause of the fires has not yet been determined, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that 18 individuals had been detained under suspicion of arson, including one caught in the act.Netanyahu pointed to favorable conditions for fires, citing strong winds, extreme dryness, and the presence of open, shrub-covered areas as contributing factors to the rogue flames. On Thursday, police arrested a 19-year-old male from East Jerusalem who allegedly expressed support for the wildfires on social media. To bolster firefighting efforts, planes from Croatia, Italy, and Cyprus are expected to arrive in the region. The Palestinian Authority also extended an offer of assistance, although Volvovitch indicated that they would not be joining the current firefighting operations. However, past instances of cooperation between Palestinian and Israeli firefighters, like during a similar wildfire in 2021, highlighted the potential for collaboration despite ongoing political tensions.Israel’s fire and rescue service has implemented a ban on lighting fires in open areas until May 7, while still permitting designated barbecuing in specified locations. This comes as many Israelis traditionally celebrate Independence Day with outdoor cookouts at parks and beaches. As the firefighting efforts continue, concerns mount over the possibility of further fire outbreaks if the winds pick up, underscoring the critical need for a concerted response in the face of nature's challenges.
