Tarcila Rivera-Zea, a prominent advocate for Indigenous rights, has transformed her past experiences into a powerful drive to support Indigenous women in Peru and beyond. Born into the Quechua community in the Andes, Tarcila faced poverty and linguistic barriers in her early years. For the first decade of her life, she lived in a world defined by her culture, speaking only Quechua, eating traditional foods, and wearing simple clothing. Unable to communicate, she left after just one year. However, at the age of 10, a pivotal change occurred when her mother sent her to Lima to live with her father, who had migrated to the city for work. This move allowed Tarcila to enroll in a public school and learn Spanish, a moment she describes as transformative. Now at 74, Tarcila has spent decades advocating for Indigenous rights and economic opportunities. Her mixed ancestry, with a Quechua father and a brown mother from a family of colonizers, ignited her passion for social justice.
