PARIS (AP) — In a vivid display of international diplomacy, French President Emmanuel Macron was seen calling U.S. President Donald Trump during a roadblock incident in New York City. Police stopped Macron as he attempted to cross a street to reach France's diplomatic mission following his speech at the U.N. General Assembly.
Blocked by officers for a VIP motorcade, Macron took the opportunity to dial Trump directly. How are you? Guess what? I'm waiting in the street because everything is frozen for you! he quipped. Reports confirmed that Trump was indeed on the line.
Macron was in New York to announce France's formal recognition of Palestinian statehood, a significant step aimed at reviving peace talks in the Middle East. He explained to police he was trying to walk to the mission after delivering his address, highlighting the importance of this diplomatic engagement.
With 10 aides in tow, Macron could be heard negotiating with the officers as they explained the ongoing security protocols. Fortunately, he was soon able to continue his walk when the street reopened.
As he maintained contact with Trump, he added, I would love this weekend to have a short discussion with Qatar and you on the situation in Gaza, underlining his proactive approach in international relations.
France's recognition of Palestinian statehood was made public at the beginning of a high-profile U.N. meeting that sought to galvanize support for a two-state solution to the protracted conflict between Israel and Palestine.
