In brief
The upcoming election will see Canadians participating in a critical vote to choose their representatives as Mark Carney leads the Liberals against Conservative hopes for a comeback.
As Canada approaches its federal election on April 28, 2025, citizens are preparing to cast their votes in a significant decision that will shape the country’s political future. The election pits the current Liberal government, under new leader Mark Carney—successor to Justin Trudeau—against the Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, who is attempting to return to power after nearly a decade in opposition. On voting day, eligible participants will include all Canadian citizens, including prisoners and citizens living abroad, with the exception of the chief electoral officer, who is barred from voting during their 10-year term. Additionally, to maintain political neutrality, the governor general, who embodies the king's powers in Canada, traditionally abstains from voting.Canadians only need to focus on electing their local representatives in the House of Commons, which will now consist of 342 members due to population increases. The election employs a “first past the post” system. This means that candidates can win seats without needing to secure a majority of votes, as the individual with the most votes in each local riding emerges victorious. It is important to note that this election will not include referendums or votes for other offices. In preparation for the election, most Canadians have received a card through the mail indicating their designated polling locations and information regarding four days of advance voting set to begin Friday. Elections Canada, the nonpartisan agency overseeing the election, provides an online service for those who may have discrepancies with their voter cards or have yet to receive them. With the election on the horizon, Canadians are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the voting process to ensure their voices are heard.
