Devastating Floods Claim Lives in French Riviera Amid Severe Storms

The French Riviera is reeling from catastrophic flooding triggered by relentless storms, with three confirmed deaths, extensive property damage, and transportation disruptions reported across the region.

Flooding caused by relentless heavy rainfall in southern France has resulted in at least three fatalities, prompting local authorities to initiate emergency responses in the affected areas. The tragic incidents occurred in the popular coastal resort town of Le Lavandou, where the bodies of an elderly couple were discovered after they were swept away while attempting to evacuate their home. Another victim lost their life in Vidauban after their vehicle became submerged in floodwaters, as confirmed by local officials.

The torrents of rain have left a significant mark on the French Riviera, flooding streets, disrupting power supplies, and forcing rail services to a standstill. Two regional trains were halted overnight due to damage sustained to railway tracks. The couple, whose deaths are now under investigation, were reportedly caught off guard by the rapid influx of water, with the town suffering over 250mm of rainfall within a single hour.

Local officials are grappling with the chaotic aftermath, describing the flooding as a catastrophic event. Mayor Gil Bernardi characterized the violent nature of the storms, which resulted in torn-up roads and collapsed bridges. Following the deluge, Le Lavandou continues to face challenges with power and water outages, and access remains severely restricted.

In addition, emergency responses have seen more than 500 calls to rescue services, prompting the deployment of hundreds of emergency workers from surrounding areas. Although initial severe weather warnings for thunderstorms and flooding were later adjusted, the impact of the storms has left over 600 homes without electricity, and ongoing weather challenges are anticipated for the region.
