Greece Faces Nationwide Strike on Second Anniversary of Train Tragedy

Workers halt transportation and services in protest against inadequate safety measures following a catastrophic rail disaster.

On the second anniversary of Greece's deadliest train crash, thousands of workers across the country initiated a general strike demanding accountability and improved rail safety standards. The 24-hour walkout, led by major labor unions, disrupted flights, ferries, and public services, reflecting ongoing public anger over governmental inaction.

A significant general strike unfolded in Greece on Friday, halting public transportation, flights, and services as many workers left their posts in memory of the tragic rail disaster that claimed 57 lives two years ago. The 24-hour protest, organized by Greece’s leading labor unions, underscores the persistent frustration surrounding the government's inadequate response and accountability for the calamity.

Demonstrations were held not only across Greece but also in other major cities in Europe, as protesters rallied for justice and enhanced safety measures in the railway sector. Flights to and from Greek airports were completely suspended, with ferries and trains similarly grounded. Limited public transportation managed to operate to facilitate attendees' travel to the rallies.

Among the sectors participating in the strike were educators, healthcare professionals, lawyers, and emergency service personnel, highlighting the widespread discontent affecting various facets of public life. Additionally, many stores closed their doors, and several artists canceled their performances as a show of solidarity with the ongoing movement.

The demonstrations are a response to the sluggish judicial proceedings that have failed to hold any politicians accountable for the tragedy, which continues to shatter lives throughout Greece. Anger remains palpable, with calls for significant changes to safety protocols and security measures in the nation’s railway system taking center stage during this 24-hour event.
