Minnesota Shooting Suspect Identified as 'Prepper' with Political Motives
FBI reports that Vance Boelter, charged with the shooting of a state lawmaker and her husband, had doomsday preparations and a list of political targets.
The FBI revealed that Vance Boelter, the man charged with the recent shootings in Minnesota, was a self-identified doomsday "prepper." His wife, Jenny Boelter, informed authorities that their family belonged to a group devoted to preparing for catastrophic events, as detailed in court documents. The 57-year-old Boelter faces serious charges for allegedly killing Democratic House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, last Saturday. In addition, he inflicted severe injuries on Democratic State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, during the attack.
Vance Boelter was captured by police in a wooded area following an extensive two-day search. His wife was intercepted during a traffic stop soon after the incident, reportedly attempting to leave with their four children. Investigators revealed that Boelter had sent her a text suggesting they prepare for imminent danger, stating that they should leave the house due to a potential armed threat at their home. The document includes the FBI agent's note about the alarming contents of Boelter's message.
Upon examination of Mrs. Boelter's car, law enforcement discovered approximately $10,000 in cash, multiple passports, and two firearms. As of now, she has not faced any criminal charges. In court filings, Jenny Boelter mentioned that her husband had prepared a "bailout plan" for her, outlining her actions in case of an emergency. Furthermore, she noted that Vance collaborated with a business partner from Washington state to run a security company as well as a fishing operation in the Congo.
In response to the shocking violence, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz described the shootings as an "act of targeted political violence," emphasizing the dangerous climate surrounding political discourse. Reports from the Minnesota Star Tribune indicate that Boelter had sent a nonsensical letter to the FBI, claiming he was directed to kill Senator Amy Klobuchar as part of a conspiracy contrived to facilitate Governor Walz's political aspirations. No evidence supports any such plot and during the investigation, authorities found a list of roughly 70 potential targets in Boelter's possession, which included fellow Democrats, such as Klobuchar and Senator Tina Smith.
Furthermore, it has been disclosed that Boelter disguised himself in police attire to gain entry into the homes of the lawmakers he attacked. Yvette Hoffman, who sustained injuries in the incident, has been released from the hospital, while her husband continues to receive treatment. The couple together endured seventeen gunshot wounds, and it was their daughter, Hope, who managed to alert authorities during the attack.
