Tragedy Strikes as Five Drown Amidst Dangerous Waves on Australian Coast
Severe ocean conditions lead to multiple drownings over Easter weekend across NSW and Victoria.
Australia's eastern region is currently experiencing an alarming surge in wave activity, resulting in five drownings as Easter weekend begins. Fresh reports indicate that two additional individuals are still unaccounted for across New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria.
The grim incidents unfolded on Saturday when authorities discovered the body of a man near Tathra in southern NSW. This tragic find came a day after a 58-year-old fisherman lost his life, along with two other men in separate mishaps throughout the state. Meanwhile, in an ongoing rescue operation near Sydney, officials are searching for a man who was swept into the ocean.
In Victoria, a woman drowned, and a man remains missing after their group was dragged into the sea in San Remo. Remarkably, one of the women in the group managed to return to the shore, but both victims could not make it back, raising concerns about safety along the coast.
Victoria's Premier, Jacinta Allan, expressed her condolences, describing it as a "devastating start" to the Easter celebrations and acknowledging the potential for further distressing news.
The harsh weather has prompted warnings from safety officials. Adam Weir, from Surf Life Saving Australia, urged beachgoers to stick to patrolled areas. Data reveals that over the past decade, 630 people have drowned at unpatrolled beaches. “These coastal spots can harbor unexpected dangers,” Weir warned, reiterating their important safety advice: "Stop, Look, Stay Alive."
