Construction begins on first road bridge linking the two nations, amidst military cooperation.
North Korea has hailed the initiation of construction on its first road bridge to Russia as a "significant" milestone in the enhancement of bilateral relations, as reported by the state media outlet KCNA. This new bridge, which will cross the Tumen River in North Korea's northeast region, commenced construction on Wednesday. It is strategically located adjacent to the existing Soviet-era rail connection known as the 'Friendship Bridge.'
According to reports from Russia's Kommersant newspaper, the bridge is slated for completion by mid-2026. This development follows North Korea’s recent confirmation that it has committed troops to assist Russia in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, further solidifying their partnership.
The bridge signifies a deepening alliance between North Korea and Russia, particularly since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which has led both countries to seek closer ties amid international sanctions. The announcement for the bridge project was made during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Pyongyang last year, where he secured an agreement establishing a "comprehensive strategic partnership," denoting the highest level of cooperation between the two nations.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin emphasized that this bridge represents more than just an engineering project. "It symbolizes our common desire to strengthen friendly, good-neighborly relations and to increase inter-regional cooperation," he stated.
The construction announcement coincided with reports from South Korean lawmakers regarding the deaths of over 600 North Korean troops fighting for Russia in Ukraine, according to their intelligence. In exchange for military assistance, Moscow is said to have offered North Korea technical support related to spy satellites, drones, and anti-aircraft missiles.
Earlier this week, North Korean officials declared that their soldiers had played a critical role in "completely liberating" Russia's Kursk border region amid Russia's struggle against Ukraine’s incursions.
