An outbreak of severe food poisoning in northern France has culminated in the tragic death of a 12-year-old girl, with seven other children hospitalized. The outbreak, centered around the town of Saint-Quentin south of Lille, first saw symptoms arise on June 12, leading families to rush their children to medical care over the subsequent days.

The local prefect confirmed that the girl passed away on Monday due to haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS), a rare condition associated with acute kidney failure, often resulting from infections caused by E. coli bacteria. Notably, the infected children, aged between 1-12 years, are not believed to have shared meals or activities, complicating efforts to trace the source of the outbreak.

As of Wednesday evening, the Hauts-de-France regional health authority reported that all eight children displayed severe digestive symptoms such as bloody diarrhea, with five diagnosed with HUS. Health officials are conducting extensive biological analyses to pinpoint the bacterial strain responsible for each case. Notably, authorities have ruled out any contamination related to local tap water, which remains deemed safe for consumption and cooking.

With families reporting varied food sources, the investigation into the outbreak's origin is challenging. Food inspectors are now focusing on the possibility of contaminated meat as a potential vector, leading to the temporary closure of several local butchers. One butcher indicated that all meat products and associated items had been removed for testing.

Parents are urged to maintain strict hygiene protocols at home, including frequent hand-washing, thorough washing of fruits and vegetables, adequate cooking of meat, and careful separation of raw and cooked food items.
