A court ruling addresses antisemitic assaults linked to a soccer match, marking significant legal actions.
In a landmark ruling, a Dutch court has convicted five individuals of public violence and incitement related to recent attacks on Israeli soccer fans in Amsterdam. This decision follows a series of antisemitic assaults that targeted supporters of Maccabi Tel Aviv in the days surrounding a match against Ajax on November 7.
The incidents prompted a swift police response, as groups of offenders reportedly engaged in hit-and-run tactics, attacking fans on foot and by bicycle. Tensions escalated when Ajax supporters allegedly stole and burned a Palestinian flag, accompanied by inflammatory chants and vandalism, including an assault on a taxi.
The court’s decision resulted in prison sentences for four of the defendants, who received terms varying from one to six months. Traditionally, offenders in similar cases might be sentenced to community service, but the judge emphasized that the severity of these crimes necessitated imprisonment.
Evidence presented during the trial revealed that some of the defendants participated in a WhatsApp group named “Community Center II.” This group was alleged to have plotted attacks by sharing details regarding the whereabouts of Israeli fans, with some members openly expressing their intent to harm Jewish individuals. "I may never get this chance again," one member wrote, showcasing the malicious intent discussed within the group.
While the court acknowledged the reactions of Israeli supporters in the lead-up to the match and the broader discontent in Dutch society concerning the Gaza conflict, it firmly stated that this societal context does not excuse the violence perpetrated against the Israeli fans.
Further deliberations are expected as the court considers additional charges related to attempted manslaughter in two other ongoing cases linked to the aforementioned violence.
