Ukraine Secures Return of 1,212 Fallen Soldiers in Latest Body Exchange with Russia
In a recent prisoner swap, Ukraine has successfully repatriated 1,212 soldiers from Russia amid ongoing conflict.
The return of 1,212 deceased Ukrainian soldiers from Russia marks a crucial moment in the ongoing war, as confirmed by Ukraine’s coordination centre for the treatment of prisoners of war. The exchange, which also saw Russia receive 27 bodies, reflects a broader agreement reached during recent peace talks in Turkey, where both countries have committed to exchange up to 6,000 bodies, including severely wounded soldiers and young prisoners under 25.
The announcement by Russian negotiator Vladimir Medinsky indicated that Russia would initiate the exchange of gravely injured POWs by Thursday. The cohort of returned soldiers includes individuals hailing from diverse regions of Ukraine such as Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia. Following the return, Ukraine's POW centre has committed to expediting the identification process for the deceased.
This repatriation is not an isolated incident; thousands of bodies have been exchanged in over 70 prior repatriation events since the conflict began. However, this particular exchange was preceded by accusations from Moscow that Ukraine had been negligent in collecting the bodies, which Medinsky claimed had been waiting in refrigerated transport for several days.
Earlier this week, the initial phase of these exchanges elicited strong emotional responses, as families of missing soldiers anxiously awaited news about their loved ones at the Belarus border. Although both sides conducted exchanges there, specific numbers regarding the total exchanged individuals were not disclosed. As families continue to grapple with uncertainty, they remain hopeful for the safe return of their missing loved ones amidst an evolving and challenging peace process.
