A devastating airstrike by Russian forces targeted a prison in southeastern Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region, resulting in the deaths of 16 individuals and injuring more than 30 others, as confirmed by local authorities. The overnight assault involved multiple high-explosive aerial glide bombs, which also inflicted damage on surrounding civilian homes, according to regional governor Ivan Fedorov.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, condemned the incident as "another war crime" committed by Russia. This strike is part of a troubling pattern, as Zaporizhzhia has faced persistent bombardments since the onset of the full-scale invasion in 2022. Though Russia claims to have annexed this region, it is predominantly under Ukrainian control.

Fedorov noted that significant portions of the regional prison premises were destroyed, although specific locations were not disclosed. Ukraine's human rights commissioner characterized the attack as a blatant violation of humanitarian law, asserting that individuals in custody are entitled to life and protection, irrespective of their situation.

In a parallel development, U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stern ultimatum to Russia, demanding that the Kremlin agree to a ceasefire within "about 10 or 12 days," threatening broad sanctions if they fail to comply. This ultimatum follows Trump's earlier declaration of a 50-day window for the Kremlin to pursue a truce with Kyiv, a warning that has not deterred the relentless Russian strikes on Ukrainian territory.

Further compounding the situation, missile and drone assaults were reported late Monday in the Dnipropetrovsk region, which also counts among the areas heavily affected by the ongoing conflict. Casualties included at least two fatalities and several injuries, with reports emerging of additional attacks resulting in civilian deaths across multiple districts.

As the conflict deepens, Russia has claimed recent advances in southern Ukraine, including the capture of the village of Maliyevka; however, these assertions have been met with skepticism from Ukrainian authorities.

In a retaliatory response, Russian officials reported that Ukraine launched a series of drones against the southern Rostov region, resulting in at least one death and various injuries, underscoring the escalating tit-for-tat nature of the current hostilities.
