Crisis in Uttarakhand: Flash Floods Trigger Rescues Amid Cloudburst

Rescue operations are unfolding in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, where a catastrophic cloudburst has triggered severe flash floods, leaving dozens of individuals feared trapped. The cloudburst occurred around 13:30 IST, resulting in extraordinary rainfall that caused the Kheerganga river to overflow and inundate the riverside village of Dharali, an area known for its hotels and tourist attractions.

Footage from eyewitnesses showcases the destructive force of the floods, as torrents of murky water surged through Dharali, demolishing structures in its path. The loud cries of locals could be heard urging loved ones to evacuate before the floodwaters engulfed the area, leading to fears that many may be trapped under the debris, including the historically significant Kalpkedar temple.

Emergency responders, comprised of army and paramilitary forces, are on-site conducting rescue efforts. However, the harsh weather conditions are complicating these operations, with rainfall continuing to batter the region. The immediate vicinity has become increasingly hazardous, as the sludge from the Kheerganga has partially obstructed the primary river Bhagirathi—creating an artificial lake that poses additional risks to surrounding communities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences via social media, assuring citizens that relief teams were mobilized to assist those afflicted by the disaster. Prashant Arya, Uttarkashi's senior-most official, highlighted the challenges faced in communication efforts due to the area's erratic connectivity.

Dharali, located just 2 kilometers from Harsil—another popular destination with a significant Indian army base—has seen a substantial influx of rescue resources. Some of the injured have already begun receiving treatment at the army camp, as authorities continue to assess the situation and work towards getting trapped individuals to safety. The gravity of the situation remains a significant concern, with the need for prompt action becoming more urgent as heavy rains persist.
