US and Somalia Launch Airstrike Amidst Battle for Adan Yabaal
US and Somali forces target al-Shabab militants in a strategic confrontation over a key town.
The United States and Somali forces conducted a joint airstrike targeting al-Shabab militants amidst fierce fighting for the control of Adan Yabaal, located north of Mogadishu. According to the Somali information ministry, the “well-coordinated” strike resulted in the deaths of 12 militants, including notable leaders of the al-Qaeda-linked terrorist organization. This military action follows an assault by al-Shabab militants, who are attempting to regain power in regions they previously controlled.
Concerns over a resurgence of jihadist activity have risen in recent months due to a surge in attacks, particularly following a failed assault on President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s convoy last month. Al-Shabab has been engaged in combat with the Somali government for nearly two decades, aiming to replace the existing federal government with an Islamic regime. Despite losing significant ground due to military operations led by the African Union in the previous years, the group remains a formidable adversary, conducting counter-offensives across the central and southern regions of Somalia. The Somali administration claims that al-Shabab has been significantly weakened.
The airstrike, which occurred on Wednesday evening, was described as a measure to diminish the threat posed by the militants. The information ministry clarified that the target was identified as a location where the fighters regrouped and hid, ensuring that there were no civilian casualties reported. Adan Yabaal has switched hands multiple times; it was captured by al-Shabab in 2016 before being retaken by government forces last year.
Intense clashes erupted Wednesday when al-Shabab raided Adan Yabaal, deploying heavy explosives. Local residents confirmed that militants had regained control over parts of the town, although the government has not officially commented on the current status. President Mohamud visited Adan Yabaal last month, reinforcing the area’s importance in their military strategy against the insurgents.
In a separate military confrontation near Baidoa, the Somali national army announced the elimination of at least 35 militants who attempted an attack on an army base. President Mohamud has characterized these confrontations as temporary setbacks, reaffirming his administration's commitment to eradicating the threat posed by al-Shabab and restoring stability in the region.
