Tragic Avalanche Claims Life of Skier in the French Alps
A large avalanche near Mont Blanc results in the death of a dual national skier.
A devastating avalanche struck the French Alps on Tuesday, claiming the life of a skier identified as a dual Brazilian-Portuguese national. Local officials confirmed that the avalanche, described as “very large”, occurred in the Les Grands Montets resort, located at the foot of Mont Blanc, around 16:35 local time (15:35 GMT).
The incident unfolded when the avalanche, measuring approximately 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) in length and 400 meters wide, was detected by ski patrols as they were preparing to close an off-piste area to the public due to unfavorable conditions. The skier, aged 55, was found by rescue teams, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initially, there were reports claiming the victim was British; however, the Chamonix High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoon (PGHM) and the local public prosecutor clarified the man’s nationality on Wednesday. The family of the deceased has been notified, and officials stated that no additional casualties have been reported due to this tragic event.
Following the avalanche, the Haute-Savoie prefecture issued a reminder to skiers and hikers to exercise extreme caution in the face of heightened avalanche risks prevalent this January.
