Netanyahu's Controversial Proposal for Full Gaza Reoccupation Sparks Outrage

Israeli PM's plan to fully occupy Gaza encounters military disapproval and international concern amidst humanitarian crisis.

Prime Minister Netanyahu's intended push for the complete reoccupation of Gaza raises alarms among military leaders and humanitarian advocates, echoing concerns for hostages and civilian safety.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to present a controversial plan aiming for the full reoccupation of the Gaza Strip during an upcoming meeting with his security cabinet, according to reports from Israeli media. A senior official has been quoted stating, "The die has been cast. We're going for the full conquest of the Gaza Strip – and defeating Hamas," reflecting the government's aggressive stance toward the ongoing conflict.

Opposition to this plan has arisen, especially from military chiefs who question the viability of complete occupation under the current circumstances, leading to tensions within the military ranks. An unnamed official suggested that if the army chief disapproves of the strategy, he should consider resigning.

Families of hostages held in Gaza are increasingly worried that a full reoccupation may endanger their loved ones. Current estimates report that 20 of the 50 hostages are believed to still be alive, while polls indicate that a significant majority—three in four Israelis—favor a ceasefire that could enable a safe return for the captives.

The international community, including many of Israel's allies, has voiced opposition to the idea of reoccupation, urging a focus on achieving a ceasefire and addressing the escalating humanitarian crisis impacting Gaza's population. A letter endorsed by hundreds of retired Israeli security officials and former intelligence heads was recently sent to US President Donald Trump, calling for American pressure on Netanyahu to halt military operations. One prominent signatory, former domestic intelligence chief Ami Ayalon, expressed skepticism regarding further military actions, pointing out that although Hamas may be militarily weakened, its underlying ideology continues to garner sympathy among Palestinians and wider Islamic communities.

These developments follow a breakdown in indirect negotiations with Hamas over a potential ceasefire and hostage agreement. Recent released footage showing two Israeli hostages in dire condition has shaken public sentiment and amplified fears surrounding military escalation. One of the captives, identified as Evyatar David, was seen struggling to dig what he reports to be his own grave in an underground tunnel, amplifying distress among Israelis.

While Israel's military claims operational control over 75% of Gaza, the plan entails further incursion into densely populated areas where over 2 million Palestinians reside. Critics have raised critical concerns regarding the implications for civilians and the operations of humanitarian organizations, as the situation in Gaza has reached catastrophic levels, with approximately 90% of the population displaced and reliant on humanitarian assistance amidst accusations against Israel of obstructing aid flows.

There has been no formal response from the Palestinian Authority, which condemned the proposal and urged global intervention to prevent a potential reoccupation. Observers note that certain far-right Israeli politicians have long advocated for the complete annexation of Gaza and the establishment of Jewish settlements there.

This move draws stark contrast to Israel's previous withdrawal in 2005 when it dismantled settlements in Gaza and withdrew its forces, maintaining strict control over the territory's accessibility in collaboration with Egypt.

Amid growing calls for reviving the two-state solution, which envisions an independent Palestinian territory alongside Israel, Israel's actions have triggered heightened international attention. Last week, Canada and the UK joined France in announcing conditional plans to recognize a Palestinian state, emphasizing global interest in peacefully resolving the conflict. Netanyahu is expected to engage in discussions with military leaders regarding potential military strategies, including surrounding central refugee camps and conducting air strikes.

Analysts within Israel have expressed skepticism regarding the practicality and effectiveness of Netanyahu's aggressive military objectives, noting that this represents an unprecedented gamble on his part. The ongoing conflict, which escalated after a Hamas attack on October 7 that resulted in significant Israeli casualties, has produced staggering loss of life, with estimates from local health authorities claiming over 61,000 Palestinians have died in the military response since then.
