Capturing Reality: Ukraine's Photojournalists Weave Tales of War and Resilience

With the backdrop of an ongoing conflict, Ukrainian photojournalists delve into the human side of war, sharing compelling narratives filled with pain, loss, and moments of unexpected joy.

As Russia's invasion of Ukraine continues, photographers like Vlada and Kostiantyn Liberov, Valeria Demenko, and Alexander Ermochenko shed light on the harrowing and sometimes heartening realities of the war. Their powerful images document not just the devastation but also the resilience of individuals caught in this conflict.

In the three years since Russia initiated its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a multitude of photographers have worked tirelessly to document the war's human toll, both on the front lines and within civilian populations. Their poignant photographs and stories resonate with those captured in BBC reports since February 2022.

Husband and wife duo Vlada and Kostiantyn Liberov transitioned from wedding photography in their hometown of Odesa to documenting the grim realities of war. Vlada recalls, “We moved from capturing love stories, to documenting Russian war crimes." The dangers are tangible; after an explosion in Donetsk in 2023, Vlada ended up with shrapnel lodged in her body. Kostiantyn shared a haunting image of a soldier losing a comrade during a raid into Russia, portraying the intricate emotional burdens on the troops: "To lose your friend in an attack inside Russia is very difficult."

The emotional toll that accompanies such harrowing documentation weighs heavily on the Liberovs. “It hurts knowing you cannot return to these places,” reflected Vlada, recalling the struggle to evacuate civilians from war-torn towns. Amid grief, they find solace in capturing moments of joy, like the tears of a father holding his newborn daughter, a reminder of what they are fighting for.

Valeria Demenko, who has worked with Ukraine's state emergency service since 2016, also recounted the heart-rending experiences of rescuing victims after Russian shelling, notably the sorrow of not finding the body of a missing girl. “We give every last ounce of strength to document Russia's crimes against peaceful Ukrainians," she stated, emphasizing the importance of her role.

Photographers like Alexander Ermochenko, who have navigated through both Ukrainian and Russian-controlled areas, seek to portray the shared humanity amid the conflict. He notes, “The fear on the face of the owner of a destroyed house is the same on both sides of the front.” His powerful images capture moments of despair juxtaposed with the resilience of everyday life amid destruction, a crucial reminder of the stark realities faced by civilians.

Meanwhile, Alina Smutko, working from Kyiv, shares her personal experience of enduring a barrage of missile attacks daily, navigating her fear while documenting life in the war-torn country. Understanding the necessity of chronicling these events, she believes, “If something hasn't been photographed, it hasn't happened."

The dedication shown by these photojournalists highlights the importance of uncovering the truth in the shadows of war, ensuring that stories of loss, resilience, and humanity endure in the collective memory. Through their lenses, they not only bear witness to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine but also contribute to a broader understanding of the human condition in times of strife.
